1 Donovan, William Joseph
(1883-1959) Донован, Уильям ДжозефЮрист, военный; окончил Колумбийский университет [ Columbia University], был адвокатом до 1912. С этого года начал военную карьеру, служил на мексиканской границе и к началу первой мировой войны был майором. В ходе ее получил ряд наград, в том числе "Почетную медаль Конгресса" [ Congressional Medal of Honor] и прозвище "Дикий Билл" [Wild Bill]. В 1922-24 был окружным прокурором, а в 1925-29 помощником генерального прокурора США. В 1935-41 по поручению Ф. Д. Рузвельта [ Roosevelt, Franklin Delano (FDR)] как наблюдатель посетил ряд стран, в результате представил докладную о создании Управления военной разведки для работы во всем мире. В 1942 под его руководством было создано Управление стратегических служб [ Office of Strategic Services]. Был директором Управления до 1945. сокр OSS; истФедеральное ведомство, существовавшее в 1942-45 и занимавшееся сбором и анализом стратегической разведывательной информации в период второй мировой войны. Находилось в подчинении Объединенного комитета начальников штабов [ Joint Chiefs of Staff]. В 1945 его функции были переданы Госдепартаменту [ Department of State, U.S.] и Военному департаменту [ War Department].
